Changing Backgrounds

I have no intention of doing this for anyone and was going to post a regular before and after photo but Hannsel-san already posted the picture so I decided to amp this blog post and make a simple tutorial. Anyway, I kind of re-categorize this blog and put a Tutorial category so I decided to make one... LOL

This is the raw picture of Hannsel-san taken recently in AX’11. I’m so proud of how her first cosplay convention turn out and kind of jealous but mostly proud~!! My FB dash/wall is filled with cosplay stuff these past few days, I’m about to cry!! So beautiful!!

I actually have several pictures of her that I adore from her convention photos but I choose this cause it’s very “abuse-able” (sorry, really me and shounen-ai… *ashamed*). Just kidding, I mean it’s easier to work with.

Let’s start with the raw picture.

First that I did is remove the logo showing through the parasol. To do that all you have to use is the Healing Tool and change mode to Replace (if you don’t know how to use this just press Alt on your keyboard then with mouse click on the color you want) and that’s basically it with this photo. I didn’t closely crop yet, I’ll do that in a bit.

Next is the background. I searched this through Google, I was actually looking for a decent Japanese festival photo or a traditional Japanese street kind of like in Rorouni Kenshin or whatever scene I’ve seen in my head (seriously I’ve seen so much Anime and Jdrama I can’t tell where that image is from). Since I couldn’t find one and ended up using this cheery blossom garden / bridge photo.

Sorry I forgot where I got this image but I'll try to look for it...

Before doing anything you should study your image. If you put the two photos together, it looks quite bad cause of the lighting. In this case you can edit the brightness of any of the photo but I choose to edit the cheery blossom photo since the cosplay photo is already too bright and my concern is that it might ruin the picture (I’m really not good with photoshop yet).

(music change: VANILLA~!! kyaaaaa~ GACKT-sama!!! )

But before I change it I’ll closely crop the photo first. I do this to see what parts of the photo should stay kind of like making the background my guide. I just used a regular eraser tool. Since the cosplay photo has lots of light parts I have to be careful of what to erase. Like the white parts on the parasol handle, some of the skin in the hands and the tips of the parasol.

After that I basically played with the Brightness and Contrast setting to match the cosplay photo’s brightness. Also be careful where you put this layer, cause if you put this above or after the cosplay photo, that photos's brightness and contrast will change too. Put this layer directly above or after the photo you are going to edit.

Last thing I did is make the parasol see-through, remember the parasol is see-through right from the beginning and it would also make it look like she’s actually there. To do that just use the eraser tool and change its opacity to 10%, with the eraser opacity lowered the image isn’t going to be totally erased.

I also lightly blurred the edges of the cosplay photo, the edges looks a little harsh from the erasing. But you can skip this part.

Aaaaand, that’s about it!!

I also decided to cover up that parasol sitting of the bridge, it’s kind of weird that Hannsel-san is holding a parasol and there’s a random parasol on the background. Then I just cropped after that.

Again I don’t have epic skill using photoshop yet, so telling me that there’s a better way is futile. But if you’re going to teach me that better way then go ahead I would love to learn more tricks and totally love you for it and maybe even bow down at your feet!

Also tell me what you think, does it look fake to you? I can’t really tell since I know its fake...

And since I'm poor and basically lazy to find an upgrade, I still use Photoshop ver. 7...

Live each day with a SMILE! As GACKT-sama said, “there is no such thing as unnecessary smile” (well that’s what at least I read on GACKT-sama’s translated tweet ^^;) but I believe in it 100%~!!!

I hope before that happens I have a more epic job so I'm ready to cosplay~!! *stupid low paying job*
I wonder what should we do, I'm imagining something like Magnet Gakupo and Kaito version (I'm Gakupo obsessed and you like Kaito, it's perfect!!! LOL) or should I go for my dream cosplay Rangiku Matsumoto?
Gaaaaaaah~ why am I thinking of this now, I need a good job first!!! Oh please pray for me, I want job!!! I want it!!!

I know LOL, making people happy with what I do, is good enough for me!! no need for paybacks!! ^^ (if you really wanna pay me back bring GACKT-sama to me LOL)
